New LEGO Star Wars animated series coming to Disney XD

LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures debuts this summer

With the Star Wars franchise helping drive Disney to record profits this past quarter, it's no surprise to see the company continue to milk that cash cow. Announced today, LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures, an all-new animated television series, will debut this summer on Disney XD.

The new series will take place during the original trilogy, set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. However, it will feautre an all new cast of heroes and villains, but I'm sure we'll see familiar Star Wars characters as well. The poster teases the appearance of Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine, although I'm unclear if they will serve as the main villains in the series.

LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures is being billed as a "fun-filled adventure comedy series," and will tell exciting adventures in the "whimsically-charged style" that fans have come to expect from LEGO. According to the official description:

"…the series stars the Freemakers, a family of scavengers who build and sell starships from the scoured debris of space battles strewn throughout the galaxy. When their youngest discovers a natural connection with the Force through an ancient artifact — the Kyber Saber — his world is turned upside down, and he and his family are thrown into an epic struggle against the Empire to restore peace and freedom to the galaxy."

The Freemakers will explore new worlds, meet new and familiar characters, and teach valuable lessons of "what it means to be a family."

The show will debut this summer on Disney XD in the U.S.

On a related note, Disney recently announced LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens, a new game that'll chronicle the events of the latest film, and feature exclusive playable content that helps bridge the gap between Return of the Jedi and the new trilogy.
