On July 11th, 2015, Satoru Iwata, Nintendo's fourth president and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) passed away after complications following surgery. Two months after his passing, Nintendo decided on the individual that would succeed him – Tatsumi Kimishima.
With the company in such an upheaval, it's understandable that Nintendo stopped the production of their Nintendo Direct video series for a short while – but it seems as though Nintendo is ready to move forward with the series once again.
According to The Wall Street Journal reporter, Takashi Mochizuki, Nintendo's new President and CEO, Kimishima, the Nintendo Direct series will begin again this year – in a new format. "Good news! Nintendo CEO Kimishima says Direct is alive, with at least one coming this year," reported Mochizuki. "Oh! Nintendo Direct being remodeled now too. In new format from next year, Mr. Kimishima says."
The Nintendo Direct that will arrive before the end of the year might very-well be focused on Nintendo's smartphone games. In March, prior to Iwata's passing, it was revealed that Nintendo had every intention of releasing a smartphone game this year – Kimishima could be keeping this intention.
