Sometimes, it's the littlest details that can end up making the biggest differences. That's exactly what Rare is going for with their upcoming pirate multiplayer game, Sea of Thieves. In the latest in a series of behind-the-scenes videos titled, "Let There Be Light," Art Director Ryan Stevenson and Principal Environment Artist Andrew Finch talk about their process in achieving the effects they strive for.
Sea of Thieves will incorporate entirely different lighting systems, each on based on a particular time of day (Ex: Morning, Noon, Night). In between each of these times, Rare will also implement transitional lighting to make things appear seamless.
One of the effects that Rare is striving to nail down is the sunset, a staple of open sea and pirate life. To achieve this, Finch says they will let the sun hang on the horizon for a moment longer for players to authentically feel the moment.
Sea of Thieves has been relatively slow to reveal too many concrete details, but the game did an enjoy a huge showing at E3 2016.
