New Star Trek TV series to release in 2017

Update (5/4/2016): A conference call with CBS has confirmed that the Star Trek TV series will still be happening in 2017. It has been detailed  to release 'episodic, week by week' unlike Netflix. In addition to that, the first episode will premiere on both CBS All Access, the streaming service and on CBS.

After the initial epsiode, the rest will release on CBS All Access.

Original Article (originally published 11/2/15):

Back in 1966, CBS TV Studios saw the birth of the original Star Trek TV series that was created by Gene Roddenberry, produced by Paramount Television and Desilu Productions, starring William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy. The series ran for three seasons, spanning 79 episodes – it spawned four TV follow-ups; The Next Generation (1987-1994), Deep Space Nine (1993-99), Voyager (1995-2001) and Enterprise(2001-05).

Producer Alex Kurtzman, the man that has been co-writing and producing the most recent Star Trek films, is set to revive the TV series come January 2017. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series will introduce new characters on the journey to discover new worlds and new civilizations, and will maintain the "dramatic contemporary themes" that have been a part of the franchise since its inception.

The series will first premiere on CBS, with all subsequent episodes airing on CBS' own digital and video on demand service, CBS All Access. The cross-platform streaming services, features CBS shows that are both current and classic available for $5.99 per month (I'm not adding another monthly fee to my card, I'll use the internet – thanks).

"This new series will premiere to the national CBS audience, then boldly go where no first-run Star Trek series has gone before — directly to its millions of fans through CBS All Access,” said Marc DeBevoise, executive vp and GM at CBS Digital Media. “We’ve experienced terrific growth for CBS All Access, expanding the service across affiliates and devices in a very short time. We now have an incredible opportunity to accelerate this growth with the iconic Star Trek, and its devoted and passionate fan base, as our first original series.”
