Just last year before the release of the divisive Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Disney announced TLJ director Rian Johnson would be helming an all-new trilogy separate from the Skywalker saga in the future. Now, Disney is announcing ANOTHER new series of Star Wars films.
Despite having five Star Wars movies in production, none of which seem to have completed scripts, Disney is getting the ball rolling on another series of Star Wars films from the creators of the HBO show Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. The two helped bring George RR Martin’s series of novels to life and have created one of the most critically acclaimed TV shows of all-time.
Disney made sure not to label this new series of film as a trilogy and noted that this is separate from the Skywalker saga and Johnson’s own trilogy. This will be something entirely new, what exactly they will entail remains a mystery at this point as no plot details were revealed. If Disney does truly plan to keep releasing one new Star Wars movie a year, it seems that Johnson’s trilogy and this new saga of films from Benioff and Weiss will alternate each year like how we get a Star Wars Story and a mainline film each year.
“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”
“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since,” Benioff and Weiss said in a joint statement. “We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”
It’s unclear when this will release but we may be able to expect it as soon as 2022 as the final planned Star Wars Story will release in 2020 and many expect Johnson’s first film to hit in 2021. Fans are a bit annoyed at the prospect of more Star Wars already and feel that they’re being overwhelmed with new entries in the beloved series but given the rich world that Benioff and Weiss helped bring to life on the small screen, it’s exciting to think of what they’ll do with a larger world on the big screen.
