Star Wars: Rogue One is just over a month away, and the movie's best trailer yet has just been released. Before I dive into the details, be forewarned that there are possible Rogue One spoilers ahead. That means if you want the movie to be a complete surprise, you've been warned, and if your eyes continue to gaze down this page, it is totally and unequivocably 100% your fault from here on.
The spoiler line:
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Within the first half minute of the trailer, we learn a lot about Jyn Erso and her backstory. The Empire appears to have tracked down her father a remote world so that he could help them build the Death Star. As he departs, Jyn is handed a crystal necklace by who we can presume is her mother, and if we're talking about the significance of a crystal in the Star Wars universe, naturally we are talking about kyber crystals (the object that powers a lightsaber). Therefore, it suggests that Jyn Erso is connected to the Jedi in some way (perhaps her mother is a former Jedi in hiding?).
It looks like The Empire has decided to stick it to the Jedi post-mortem in a very cold and sacrilege way. Much of the symbolism within the trailer points to the possibility that the Death Star's main laser weapon is powered by kyber crystals, which feels like something a Sith-led Empire would love to do.
This isn't to suggest the Jyn herself is a Jedi (probably not if she's been rebelling all over the place), but it certainly leaves open the possibility for a Kyle Katarn-like character arc for potential future films; the rogue turned Jedi.
