New Super Mario Bros. 2 succumbs to DLC

Not even a classic franchise like Mario could stave off downloadable content. Confirmed during Nintendo Direct, New Super Mario Bros. 2 for 3DS will be the first Mario game to offer DLC.

DLC for the upcoming title will be made available after the game launches, although development on the extra content will not begin until the main game is finished. At least, that's what European Nintendo president Satoru Shibata is telling fans.

The DLC will center around additional stages for the game's new Coin Rush mode. The additional mode offers players three random maps to mine for money, separate from the game's main story. Coins collected will be added across the three levels with your total being shared via StreetPass for others to beat.

Pricing and release details for the DLC were not announced.
