New Super Smash Bros. fighter Lucina is actually a Marth clone

Nintendo recently revealed that Lucina and Robin from the Fire Emblem series will be making their way to the next Super Smash Bros. (Chrom, though included, is not a playable character). However, director Masahiro Sakurai today clarified that newcomer Lucina will share a moveset with Marth, a returning SSB fighter.

“Her physical abilities are identical to Marth’s—it must be in her D.N.A.,” Sakurai said. “However where Marth’s power is concentrated in the top of the sword, Lucina’s attack strength is balanced throughout the weapon, which might make her easier to control. She’s also a bit shorter than Marth.”

Shared movesets are no new development for Super Smash Bros., what with Doctor Mario / Mario, Fox / Falco, Link / Young Link and more pairs running around. And while Lucina may not add as much to combat as Fire Emblem fans were originally banking on, it’s safe to assume that the professional fighting community will prove that those slight differences can turn her into a whole new character.
