OtherSide Entertainment has released a brand-new video of their much-talked sci-fi horror- RPG System Shock 3. It marks only the second time that we get to see actual footage of the game, after the developer released the first ever trailer earlier this year. Watch the great teaser trailer here!
It has been more than three years since we first heard about a third System Shock being actively in development. But despite so much time having passed, details about the game have been pretty much non-existent. A lot happened behind the scenes, with the original publisher Starbreeze getting into major financial troubles, ending in the developer buying the rights to System Shock 3 themselves.
Thankfully, this major distraction didn’t lead to the project being canned, and instead it looks like the game is entering the final phases of development. And we’re very grateful for that, since System Shock 3 could very well become the sequel the franchise deserves. With legendary game designer Warren Spector on board, chances are good that the third entry into the horror-RPG will become yet another beacon in the immersive-sim genre. Cult titles of said genre like Deus Ex, Dishonored and Prey can all be traced back to System Shock, and as such, finally getting a worthy successor to 1999’s System Shock 2 would be an incredible end to a 20-year wait.
If all goes well, 2020 could become the year for System Shock, with not only a third title but also a full remake of the first game. The System Shock remake is handled by Nightdive Studios who have long proven themselves as masters of classic gaming with a plethora of remasters. The remake however is their most ambitious project to date and from what we have seen so far, the developer looks to have preserved all the great things about it while catapulting all dated elements into the future.
While still not having a release window, we are hopeful that System Shock 3 will come out next year.
