Multiplayer is a standard in most first-person shooters today, which is what makes the recently announced Wolfenstein: The New Order such a rarity. The developer isn't planning any such mode.
MachineGames confirmed to GameSpot that The New Order will be a solely single-player experience. The company is taking that focus seriously.
"It's such a huge part of video game legacy," said creative director Jens Matthies. "If there's a video game museum, Wolfenstein is in the first room. It's the start of the wave that shaped the world of gaming."
Many considered the multiplayer in 2009's Wolfenstein release to be second-rate to the single-player campaign, which could explain why MachineGames has prioritized the way it has.
Announced this week, The New Order is scheduled to release in Q4 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and "next-gen consoles." Publisher Bethesda is tight-lipped about what systems "next-gen" entails, which may mean it's planning an exclusive partnership with Microsoft, which will unveil its next Xbox on May 21.
