New Tech Allows for 2 Games on 1 Screen

Vizio revealed a clever use of stereoscopic 3D technology at CES this week, allowing two players with different glasses to see two different images on screen. This wouldn’t be 3D, but instead takes the tech behind 3D and puts it to some clever use. The idea is to have supporting TVs packaged with two pairs of glasses, and with each player wearing them, the other player’s action won’t be visible.

There are a few unfortunate hitches though. Like all 3D tech, it has to be supported by the software, so it’s not something you’ll see in many games anytime soon. The bigger issue though, is that because it’s occluding half of the 1080p image, players will actually only get half the resolution. Joystiq reports that the picture quality was noticeably diminished when using this technology.

Vizio is working with EA and Ubisoft to get the tech into future games, so it’s still up in the air how much this will pick up. Despite the downsides though, I hope it becomes a viable option – what’s worse a lower resolution game or squinting at half of a split-screen?
