Ridley Scott kicked off the Alien movie franchise back in 1979 and has managed to carry on the series to its sixth installment earlier this year. Alien: Covenant, the sequel to Prometheus, is the latest addition to the series, having released May 4th, 2017, and while the franchise has always featured an A.I. character, the latest film put A.I. in the spotlight.
Sure, there were plenty of Xenomorphs in the movie, but the mastermind behind the drama was actually the A.I. (played by Michael Fassbender). Covenant was the beginning of something more than aliens. It seemed as though it was steering the franchise in the direction of the franchise's antagonist moving from the alien, to the A.I. (doing my best to avoid spoilers here).
Now, Scott has pretty much confirmed that the series will be making a shift. It's not the alien that will be taking over and destroying the humans, it's the A.I.
“I think the evolution of the Alien himself is nearly over, but what I was trying to do was transcend and move to another story, which would be taken over by A.I.s,” Ridley Scott told Empire in a podcast interview. “The world that the A.I. might create as a leader if he finds himself on a new planet. We have actually quite a big layout for the next one.”
The next film in the Alien series from Scott will be called Awakening, perhaps it's the awakening of A.I. to the fact that they were created to be subservient.
