Next wave of Oculus Rift prototypes ships this month

Oculus is wasting no time in getting their VR headset in developer and consumer hands and will be shipping the first 10,000 units of their nearly 50,000 pre-orders the week of July 14.

The VR specialist admits to being “slightly behind in manufacturing” and has openly stated that many developers will not receive their Rift until August. However, presumably thanks to Facebook’s backing, a Chinese production team is working to bring production on par with demand.

Each of the 45,000+ headset that have been ordered went for $350 each, and went incredibly quickly. As Techcrunch points out, nearly 13,000 units were ordered within the first 36 hours of the pre-order’s launch, which translates to many day-two-or-beyond buyers falling into the August arrivals.

Oculus was purchased by Facebook for the lofty price of $2 billion earlier this March, with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerburg saying “Oculus has the chance to create the most social platform ever, and change the way we work, play and communicate.”
