NFL Sunday Ticket streaming could be coming to gaming consoles with no satellite contract required

Satellite television provider DirecTV is about make cord-cutting easier. When speaking to one of my co-workers yesterday, I explained one of the big things keeping me from ditching cable or satellite television was sports. Well, if a new promotional page spotted by an Apple Insider reader is any indication, then DirecTV's popular NFL Sunday Ticket package could soon be offered without requiring users to have a separate contract for satellite TV.

"Now you can access live, out-of-market NFL games without a DIRECTV satellite TV account—no matter what team you follow," the site reads. "NFLSUNDAYTICKET.TV lets you stream games on your computer, tablet, phone, or game console. All while keeping up with real-time player stats and your fantasy teams," the promotion reads (via Apple Insider). The company says viewing will be limited to out-of-market games when it begins on September 7.

According to the promo page, there are three separate packages being offered. A $199.99 subscription will grant access via  Sunday Ticket apps on mobile devices and personal computers. There's also a separate console package that will allow you to access NFL Sunday Ticket via your gaming console (presumably Xbox and PlayStation). The last package is the "Max" which, at $329.99, combines the two and adds access to Red Zone and the new Fantasy Zone channel.

Honestly, this would be a big win for cord-cutters, who often cite live sporting events as a reason for keeping an active television subscription, but would be mutually beneficial to DirecTV as well. With more and more households starting to cut the cord, it's nice to see DirecTV embrace the movement rather than try and fight it. Why not try to sell the service separately rather than completely lose a potential customer? No official announcement has been made yet, but I feel it's only a matter of time.
