NieR: Automata is an upcoming game that's combining the twisted setting of NieR with the gameplay of Platinum Games. In other words: We have no idea what to expect, but it's going to be cool as hell and will probably feel as good as it looks. But on with the topic at hand…
A few months ago, NieR: Automata producer Yosuke Saito sat down for an interview with Nova Crystallis, and had something interesting to say about the potential for multiplayer and connectivity in the game:
Nova Crystallis: Since we have two main characters experiencing the story together and since it’s an action game I wondered if you considered including a multiplayer mode.
Yosuke Saito: There is no real direct multiplayer or co-op mode, but we are thinking about a certain connection between players. We can’t get into details right now, but there will be some connectivity.
Now some keen eyes have found this:
Traditional multiplayer is out, but as you can see above, PS+ is required for multiplayer. Given Nier's auteur director, Yoko Taro, we can only assume it will result in something strange and fanciful. It's certainly not the first time one of the Drakengard/NieR games have done something crazy, just check out NieR's "Ending D” if you don't mind spoilers and want to see the greatest, most harsh video game ending of last generation.
Of course this has sent super fans into rampant speculation mode. Given my obsession over small details tied to Dark Souls, I shouldn't be surprised by how in depth fans can go. Yet I am. How about you? Let us know what you think of Yoko Taro and NieR: Automata's potential multiplayer quirks in the comments.
