Square Enix has shared an unexpected remaster with NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139…. Yes, that is the game’s actual title. It’s a remaster of the last-gen Japan-exclusive original Nier game and is canonically tied to its much more successful sequel NieR: Automata.
When PlatinumGames and eccentric Japanese game designer Yoko Taro unleashed NieR: Automata upon unexpecting gamers back in 2017, the stylish action-adventure title instantly became a massive hit. Not only did an exceptionally satisfying gameplay loop lead to this but surprisingly deep themes as well. It also didn’t hurt that the character design was particularly striking.
NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… invites players into a dark, apocalyptic world as they join a brother’s captivating quest to cure his sister of a deadly disease – a quest which will in turn make them question everything.
But what most gamers likely didn’t know was that Automata was a sequel. Indeed, the original NieR came out way back in 2010 for the PS3 4 Xbox 360. A tad monotone gameplay mechanics and a brutally dull color palette were the reason NieR remained a niche title revered among hardcore gamers. But with Automata opening the franchise up to millions, Square Enix has seen it fit to give the original a second chance in form of a remaster.
NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… is actually even more than that. You see, the original Nier that came out in the West featured an entirely different protagonist and had changes in the story compared to the Japanese original. The newly announced remaster is taking the Japanese version as the base and thus offers even more reason to be thrilled to experience the creator’s unaltered original vision.
Gamers can look forward to an upgraded experience from the original but there’s no word about the specific changes NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… will feature at this time. Likewise, there is no information about the release date of the remaster but we at least know it will come out for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
