Ninja Theory unveils experimental new title Project: Mara

Ninja Theory, the British game studio who’s behind the Devil May Cry reboot DmC and Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, has announced Project: Mara. The developer’s newest in-development game aims to offer a grounded experience revolving around the horrors of the mind. Check out the new developer diary where the studio boss is explaining the studio’s future in-depth.

With 2017’s Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, Ninja Theory managed to break out of the mold the studio found itself in, where their games never really managed to achieve the success their creators had wished for. Neither their hyped-up PS3 exclusive Heavenly Sword nor the controversial Western Devil May Cry reboot could impress critics or gamers alike. But by going a radically different direction with Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, the studio finally landed a true hit. It even led to Microsoft acquiring the studio altogether and prompting a next-gen sequel with Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II.

Today, we are announcing Project: Mara, our new in-development experimental title that explores new ways of storytelling, and we’re excited to share the first details with you.

Project: Mara will be a real-world and grounded representation of mental terror. Based on real lived experience accounts and in-depth research, our aim is to recreate the horrors of the mind as accurately and realistically as possible. Project: Mara will be an experimental title and a showcase of what could become a new storytelling medium.

But unbeknownst to everyone, Ninja Theory has been cooking up something else alongside. Now, we know the working title at least and the themes. Project: Mara is following Hellblade’s footsteps by exploring the dark crevices of the mind and promises to deliver new ways of storytelling.

As Project: Mara is still early in development, there’s no release window naturally, nor which platforms are being targeted. But seeing that Ninja Theory is now part of the Xbox Games Studios, an Xbox and PC release is certain.
