Nintendo abandons Brazil

Brazilians like more than just soccer, in fact, they like the same things every other culture likes. It’s a crazy concept, I know. They even like video games there, but whether or not they like Nintendo games they aren’t getting them anymore.

Nintendo is officially pulling out of Brazil claiming that the country’s tax issues are to blame for their departure. “Brazil is an important market for Nintendo and home to many passionate fans but unfortunately challenges in the business local environment have made our current distribution model in the country unsustainable,” stated the Director and General Manager for Latin America of Nintendo of America, Bill van Zyll.

How high are taxes in Brazil? Well, import taxes had the PS4 is sporting a $3,999.00 BRL ($1,800 USD) price tag and the Xbox One at $2,199.00 BRL ($1,005 USD). These taxes could be avoided for the most part if Nintendo decided to manufacture their products locally. What does this mean for Nintendo gamers? Those currently with consoles and handhelds will be ok, for the most part. The consoles aren’t locked to Latin America or Brazil, they are on the same region as North America. The purchasing of games and consoles will be harder and harder to obtain as months pass.

The PS4 and Xbox One faced similar issues when coming to Brazil, Sony and Microsoft found a way around it, but for now Nintendo will be leaving the country.

Guess I’ll be playing PS4 and Xbox One games with my family when I visit.
