If you haven't yet picked up a Wii U, you might be interested in a new deal Nintendo has struck with Best Buy.
Announced today, a Wii U Special Edition Splatoon Deluxe Set will be sold exclusively at Best Buy stores across the United States and online starting on May 29. The bundle includes a Wii U Deluxe console, a download code for Splatoon, and Nintendo Land pre-installed for $299.99.
Splatoon is a contest of color in which two teams (opposite the color wheel in many cases) compete to coat the battleground in their color, eliminating enemy players all the while. This premise creates multiple interesting mechanics such as swimming in squid form through your own color in order to move quickly and up difficult terrain, which can be countered by opponents spraying their color in your path, in which you move incredibly slow.
Splatoon offers players a number of modes, including the frantic four-on-four online "Turf War", which tasks players to cover most of the ground with their team’s ink while using the Wii U GamePad controller to see a top-down view of the map as it is covered in ink in real-time. Ranked Battle, which will be made available shortly after launch, offers skill-based online rule sets, while Battle Dojo offers one-on-one matches with friends.
Splatoon amiibo figures, sold separately, can be used to gain access to special challenge stages that make it possible to earn special gear not found anywhere else in the game.
Splatoon is set to release on May 29. Earlier this year, we labeled it as one of this year's must-buy Wii U titles.
