Nintendo Boss: ‘We have to do a better job’ with the NX

Nintendo is entering a critical point with the launch of the NX. After the massive success of the Wii, the Wii U has failed to follow up in nearly every conceivable way, leading Nintendo to feel the pressure to get the NX launch right. It's not that they can't, I've always felt like Nintendo could dominate the console space if they really wanted to, but they've always had this thing about "doing things a different way." While that sounds nice and idealistic on paper, it hasn't translated to good performance for the Wii U.

Reggie Fils-Aime talked with the folks at [a]listdaily about what he thinks is important for the NX going forward. He said:

"One of the things that we have to do better when we launch the NX—we have to do a better job communicating the positioning for the product. We have to do a better job helping people to understand its uniqueness and what that means for the game playing experience. And we have to do a better job from a software planning standpoint to have that continuous beat of great new games that are motivating more and more people to pick up the hardware and more and more people to pick up the software."

Communicating the Wii U was one of the biggest things the seemed to damage the console's chances. The Wii had been targeted for a much broader audience, and broader audiences generally equal less informed audiences. For the more casual users that had picked up the Wii, many of them felt that the Wii U was some sort of expensive add-on that they didn't think enhanced the experience they were already enjoying.

To be fair, the Wii U does have a strong catalog of first party games, such as Smash Bros, Splatoon, Mario Maker, and Bayonetta 2, but 3rd party support seemed to have all but disappeared over the course of the Wii U's lifecycle. If Nintendo wants the NX to succeed on a broader scale, they are going to have to win at least some of that back.
