Nintendo dominates December 2017 sales in U.S. with Switch, 3DS, SNES Classic

After an Xbox executive suggested that the Nintendo Switch was the top-selling console in December 2017 in the United States, the official numbers are in. The NPD Group has confirmed that the Nintendo Switch sold the most units in December 2017 out of all platforms.

The Switch wasn’t the only winner last month, the 3DS saw its best month since December 2014 in December 2017. Combined, all the versions of the Nintendo 3DS sold more than 750,000, a 27% increase over last year’s December. This increase in sales pushed the 3DS family to a new lifetime milestone of selling more than 21 million units sold in the U.S.

The Nintendo Switch, 3DS, and SNES Classic totaled 2.6 million units in December 2017, which accounts for more than half of all the hardware sold during the month.

As far as which Nintendo games people were purchasing to play on their new consoles, Super Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 2 and the Pokemon Ultra games were in the top-selling games for the month.

The crazy part of the Nintendo Switch seeing sales numbers like this in December is that it reached these numbers without getting a holiday discount. The numbers the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One were not mentioned in the release.
