Nintendo files patent for disk-less stationary game console

On February 10th, 2015 Nintendo filed a patent application in United States for a "Stationary Game Apparatus, Game Apparatus, Game System, Recording Medium and Speed Control Method." The patent was officially published yesterday and includes a number of interesting details.

According to the patent, the console will have a controller with a display screen (similar to the Wii U's gamepad), as well as Speed Control Processing. The most interesting detail in the patent is that the example of the system included in the patent does not show an optical disk drive — that's right, no optical drive included.

If this is the new home console that Nintendo is working on (there has been speculation that the NX would be all-digital), it would be the first console that releases as a fully digital home console. This would make sense if the earlier speculation on an Android based console was true, but the console's plans seem to suggest that it would support game cartridges, as well as SD cards. Seeing a patent now, could very well support the claim that the console will release by October of next year.
