Nintendo is currently thinking about taking a dive into the movie industry with movies based on their video game properties, and they have plans on having a film out within two to three years.
Movies based on video games haven't had much success, and Nintendo is probably guilty for making the worst game based film ever with the Super Mario Bros. The only good movies based on games are Prince of Persia, Battleship, Dead or Alive, and Tomb Raider, but with comic book movies on the rise and an Assassin's Creed film which didn't look like utter crap coming out it, seems like there will finally be films based on video games with some quality to them, and Nintendo wants a slice of the cake.
In a interview with Japanese site Asahi Shinbun, translated by Nintendolife, Nintendo's President, Tatsumi Kimishima, said that Nintendo is currently looking into making movies. This is still in the early stages but Kimishima said that he'd want the first movie to be out within two to three years. Kimishima also said that he would like to see as much of the production as possible to be done in-house, something that would give Nintendo much more control over the production.
There are unfortunately not a lot of good movies based on video games, or games in general, but Nintendo has a lot of titles to choose from with a lot of potential like a Legend of Zelda film, an epic sci-fi Metroid movie, or maybe even a Dead or Alive style Super Smash Bros. film. The possibilities are endless.
