Nintendo NX platform could run on Android

Nintendo may not have plans to talk about its new platform/console, codenamed NX, until 2016, but that won't slow the rumor train. According to Japanese newspaper Nikkei, Nintendo NX may use Google's Android platform as its operating system.

The source claims the move by Nintendo is intended to give third-party developers "more flexibility in making content that can also be on smartphones and tablets." Previously, the Wii U's complex architecture resulted in costly development, which could explain why so few developers risked putting their game on the system. With a more open platform like Android, this could encourage more developers to consider Nintendo's console.

The "dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept" was first talked about in March alongside Nintendo's plans to create official Nintendo smartphone games with mobile game company DeNA's help. Not much is known about the NX, but Nintendo is referring to it as more of a "new concept" rather than a "simple replacement" for the 3DS or the Wii U.

Nintendo has already said there are no plans to talk about the NX at E3, so it looks like we really will have to wait until 2016 before we get official information.
