Nintendo says Splatoon global sales surpass 1 million

Nintendo's gamble on the shooter market appears to be paying off. The company announcing Splatoon has crossed the 1 million units sold threshold globally, with 476,000 physical and digital copies being sold in the Americas, more than 368,000 in Japan, and 250,000 sold across Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.

It's an impressive figure for Nintendo considering Splatoon is a Wii U exclusive and a brand new IP. The game hasn't even been out for a month and it's already cracked the top 5 sales chart for May, and we've been having fun with it.

Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie "my body is ready" Fils-Aime touched on Splatoon's success and the future of Nintendo.

“Ever since Splatoon launched on May 29 in the United States, we’ve seen thousands of people go online to have fun in this colorful, chaotic competition,” said Fils-Aime. “This milestone puts us in a nice position as we prepare to launch 11 more exclusive Wii U and Nintendo 3DS games before the end of the year, plus amiibo, digital offerings and games from our third-party partners.”

Splatoon has been receiving weekly updates since its launch, including recently with a new stage and weapon, and more content is planned for release this August.
