Nintendo Switch reaches 2 million units sold in America alone; Outsells Xbox One and PS4 in September

Nintendo took a major hit last generation with the Wii U. The console failed to make any major waves despite having a couple great games like Splatoon, Mario Kart 8, and more, due to poor marketing and various other confusing choices, the Wii U was seen as a joke. Nintendo knew they had to do something big to save themselves from another humiliating failure, that's how the Nintendo Switch was born.

The console/portable hybrid was seen as a game changer when it was revealed last October and it has slowly been gaining major traction ever since it was released in March. Games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and a plethora of indies along with the apealing technology that allows you to take great games with you wherever you go have helped catapult the console into one of the best selling consoles of 2017.

Despite only being on the market for roughly 7 months, it's sold 2 million units in America alone, just under 300,000 units sold a month. The stat was confirmed by Nintendo as part of the NPD report for the month of September where it was the top selling console for the third month in a row. In June, Nintendo revealed that the Switch had sold 4.7 million units worldwide so we can probably safely assume that the total sales are at least 5 million units sold worldwide if not more.

As we enter the holiday season, it's likely that Nintendo will push out a helluva lot more units as the console is a hot item on the wishlist of many children and gamers around the world. The addition of a bunch of new games like Super Mario Odyssey, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Doom, L.A. Noire, Resident Evil Revelations, and much more will likely make those on the edge of buying the console give in and drop their $300 on the Switch. We'll probably get more firm sales numbers at the start of 2018.

The Nintendo Switch is out now, Super Mario Odyssey will drop next week on October 27th, 2017.
