Nintendo Switch’s Joy-Cons need an additional $30 grip to charge while playing

The Nintendo Switch comes bundled with a lot of cool toys like the console, the tablet, and the Joy-Con controllers! One thing it doesn't come with is the something that allows you to charge the Joy-Cons while you're playing your games.

Although the Switch comes with a "Joy-Con Grip" which allows the Joy-Cons to fit into a more traditional controller, it doesn't charge the two palm-sized controllers. Many assumed that you'd be able to just plug in the grip to the console via a USB port but it appears you'll need to be a second grip to do that!

The $30 additional grip is almost identical to the normal one, but it has the capability to charge the Joy-Cons while you play through a cable plugged into the Switch and controller. If players choose to, they can charge the controllers while they aren't playing by attaching them to the Switch tablet and putting it in its charging dock.

The controller is said to have a 20-hour battery life per charge but Nintendo says it may lessen the more you use it. The Joy-Cons will take about 3.5 hours to get a full charge no matter which charging method you choose.

Thankfully, the battery life is so long that you can just put them on the dock when you're done playing and you won't miss a beat! However, maybe in a year or so you may want to opt for a charging grip when the battery life starts to become weaker. You can view a picture showing the differences between the controller (left is the standard controller, right is the $30 additional charging grip).

The Nintendo Switch will release March 3rd, 2017 and will cost $299.99. If you want a Switch, you're probably out of luck as pretty much every retailer is sold out of the highly anticipated console/portable hybrid.
