Nintendo Switch will reportedly have Gamecube games via Virtual Console

The Nintendo Switch could be delivering a highly requested service gamers have been clamoring for as Eurogamer and other industry insiders are reporting the Switch will be able to play Gamecube games via its Virtual Console service.

The same report goes on to say the initial Gamecube titles that will be available are Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi’s Mansion, and Super Smash Bros. Melee – and Animal Crossing is currently being tested. The Virtual Console is expected to work similarly to how it functions on the Wii, Wii U, and 3DS.

If this ends up being confirmed by Nintendo this will mark the first time Gamecube games have been made available digitally.

Meanwhile, the Switch’s Virtual Console is also expected to contain an upgrade program similar to the Wii U where earlier purchases of older games could be upgraded for a small fee instead of having to re-purchase the game.

The Nintendo Switch is expected to launch sometime in March 2017, and a hands-on event is taking place in January where we could get more info on price, bundles, and games available at launch.

We’re also waiting to hear more specifics on the console’s system specs, as earlier reports indicate the system will run at 1080p when connected to the dock but will run at 720p when on handheld.
