While The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild understandably dominates much of Nintendo's press in the weeks leading up to its long-awaited release, Nintendo might just have something else cooking behind the scenes. Game Informer is currently running Breath of the Wild as its cover story, and they stopped to ask series producer Eiji Aonuma about the possibility of the company's 3DS Zelda teams making a game for the hybrid Nintendo Switch. The answer was about as intriguing a non-answer can possibly be.
Aonuma said:
"Yes, there is definitely a possibility."
This is by no means a confirmation, but it does point to a very realistic future for the Nintendo Switch. Sure, the company has already declared that the 3DS is still going to be an active part of Nintendo's ecosystem, but it's worth wondering how long. The Switch is meant to be taken on the go, as that is one of its principal features, which is also the whole point of owning a 3DS.
Well, that and Pokemon.
The idea that a 2D Zelda game, which could be similar to something along the lines of A Link Between Worlds designed with on-the-go in mind, be part of the Switch's future might ultimately render the long-running handheld superfluous. That said, any classic Zelda fan worth their salt will gladly take a new top-down 2D Zelda game no matter which platform it's on.
