Nintendo Wii approaching 100 million sales worldwide, outsells Wii U

The Nintendo Wii is closing in on 100 million sales worldwide. The console currently sits at 99,840,000 units sold life-to-date, as March 31, 2013. This is according to Nintendo's latest official financial results.

Despite its age, the Wii actually outsold its successor, the Wii U, by about 500,000 units. 3.98 million Wii hardware units were sold worldwide, compared to just 3.45 million Wii U hardware units. Nintendo admitted in its report that the Wii U struggled to sell units due to too few game releases early in the year.

On the software front, Mario Party 9 — over one million units sold — helped boost worldwide Wii software sales to 50.61 million units. This was achieved with "few new title releases." For Financial Year 2014 (April 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014), Nintendo expects to sell another two million Wii units which would certainly push the system past the impressive milestone.
