This is no April fool's joke; the Wii U will be able to run games built with Unreal Engine 4. Speaking to Engadget, Epic co-founder Mark Rein — who last week laughed at the idea of running the new engine on Nintendo's Wii U — admitted his earlier statements were a "stupid gaffe."
"If someone wants to take Unreal Engine 4 and ship a game on Wii U, they can!" Rein explained. "If they wanna ship an Unreal Engine 4 game on Xbox 360, they could make it happen." So why did Rein initially laugh when asked about the Wii U's ability to run Unreal Engine 4 games? Perhaps because he knows that even with the new engine, the Wii U won't be able to compete graphically with "true" next-gen consoles like the PS4 and next Xbox.
Either way, Wii U owners have to be happy with the news. It was a rough week for Nintendo supporters who also found out last week that Frostbite 3 games like Battlefield 4, Dragon Age 3 and the next Mass Effect game will not run on the Wii U.
