Last month, we learned that the next trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens will drop sometime in the fall. There was hope, however, that Lucasfilm would surprise us with at least some behind-the-scenes footage — similar to what the studio showed at San Diego Comic-Con — during the panel at Disney's D23 fan convention this weekend.
Alas, that doesn't appear to be the case, as The Force Awakens director JJ Abrams confirmed to EW that the studio has no plans of showing any new clips or behind-the-scenes footage at D23.
"It is true, we are showing no footage, behind the scenes or otherwise," Abrams said, reiterating, "In the fall, there'll be a trailer."
So if no new trailer or footage for Star Wars: The Force Awakens at D23, what will Disney show during the August 15th panel "Worlds, Galaxies, and Universes: Live Action at The Walt Disney Studios"? It's possible fans could be greeted by some of the film's actors, or possibly just some concept art stills.
Despite no new footage, Abrams is still exciting for the opportunity to meet the fans, and I'm sure he'll bring some sort of compelling surprise. "We're thrilled to go to D23 and meet the fans, but it's a tricky thing to try and rush [footage] for a convention or preexisting event that would, of course, be fun to show something at."
It's also possible that The Force Awakens could take a backseat for one of the Star Wars spinoff films Disney has planned — perhaps Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One or maybe the newly announced Han Solo spinoff?
Regardless of what Disney chooses to do with its movies at D23, the compnay has big plans for Star Wars video games, promising never-before-seen gameplay, trailers, new reveals, and surprises from Disney Interactive's most anticipated games. This includes Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition and Electronic Arts' Star Wars Battlefront.
