Earlier today, a game rating for The Witness appeared on the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) that apparently revealed that the game would be releasing on the Xbox One. Previous announcements for the game had included PC, PlayStation 4 and iOS as platforms The Witness would be running on, but the Xbox One was never included in any announcements for the game.
Despite the ESRB having rated it, The Witness will not be releasing on the Xbox One at the moment.
According to Jonathon Blow, the creator of The Witness, the ESRB rated the Xbox One version alongside the PC, PS4 and iOS versions because the developers wanted to make it easier on themselves if they choose to release the game on the Xbox One in the future.
There are no plans right now for an XB1 version of The Witness. We just put that on the rating form so if we ever do XB1, we won't have

to get the game re-rated. (Provided the content is the same, which it would be).

Blow did not go on to give his reasons behind the decision to withhold releasing the game on the Xbox One at the moment, but at least Xbox One owners can have the hope that The Witness might make a release on the console one day.
