It seems like even the guys over at Bethesda were surprised at how great of a game the new DOOM game actually was and that even people enjoyed the story mode in it.
The fact that DOOM was a success can't be denied, we at GameZone gave it an 8 out of 10, and the game got high scores all over, but Pete Hines has revealed that the people over at Bethesda and id Software expected a much lower score, they expected 6 out of 10 at the best. This might be one of the few times when it was a good thing that a game didn't do as the developers expected it do.
"If you are at Bethesda and play the single-player, you might think it’s really fun and different. But you don’t know if you’re drinking your own kool-aid… is it really fun? Or are people going to play it and dislike the fact there’s no voiced protagonist, or the fact there’s no real story, and will they say: ‘id Software hasn’t got out of the 1990s. Same old, same old. 6/10’. You never know which of those two scenarios you’ll end up getting"
Pete Hines also revealed that the DOOM single player demo was one of their brighter ideas, they had been able to show off the multiplayer well but not the mode that got people to play, the single player mode.
"We did the single-player demo after launch. We had showed off the multiplayer, but we hadn’t managed to show as much of the single-player. So giving folks the chance to try it… well it turned out to be a good idea"
Now, four months after the release of DOOM I doubt that there is anyone left at Bethesda or id Software who is still wondering if DOOM did well or not, the fact that people started making giant one to one scale replicas of the BFG 9000 is evidence enough for the success of DOOM.
Bethesda and id Software is still giving updating DOOM with both free and paid content and the next update brings two whole new modes completely free of charge and an additional mode to the single player campaign is coming soon.
