Nvidia is confident that porting games to the Nintendo Switch won’t be a problem

Now with a competitive GPU in-hand, Nintendo might be ready to take on real 3rd party support. According to Nvidia, the suppliers of the Nintendo Switch's custom GPU, porting games over to the upcoming console might be easier than ever, at least when compared to the likes of the Wii and Wii U. This is in large part due to the fact that Nvidia's Tegra Chip closely aligns with the capabilities of the hardware found in the Xbox One and PS4.

In a conference call with investors last week, Nvidia's head honcho, Jen-Hsun Huang explained that the power of the Tegra chip should ease the burden on developers who are looking to port their games by allowing them to shift quickly from one platform to another, including games that have already released on PC, Xbox One, PS4.

Huang said:

"The quality of games has grown significantly. And one of the factors of production value of games that has been possible is because the PC and the two game consoles, Xbox and PlayStation, and — in the near-future — the Nintendo Switch, all of these architectures are common in the sense that they all use modern GPUs, they all use programmable shading, and they all have basically similar features.
As a result of that, game developers can target a much larger installed base with one common code base and, as a result, they can increase the production quality, production value of the games."
Streamlining a developer's workload is undoubtedly going to be a good thing for all parties involved. It means less stress on those making the game, and more games to more consumers, which showcases the potential of the Nintendo Switch as a mainstay console.
Huang also talked about the growing relationship between Nintendo and Nvidia, saying the two have been working together for "almost two years" which has encompassed "several hundred engineering years" worth of work on the Switch. With all of this, Huang is confident that Nvidia's partnership with Nintendo "will likely last two decades," which appears to indicate that Nintendo is not likely to drop out of the console race anytime soon.
