Obsidian’s Pillars of Eternity RPG not coming this spring or summer

Pillars of Eternity (formerly Project Eternity), Obsidian Entertainment's huge Kickstarter role-playing game valued at nearly $4 million in crowdfunding, isn't launching this spring. Or this summer. You'll be waiting awhile.

"It's going to come later," project lead Josh Sawyer told Eurogamer.

"When we started with a million-dollar budget and a relatively modest game with five classes [now 11], that was assuming if we get $1 million we can make this game and we'll probably get it done by April," Sawyer said. "We got almost four times as much money and that's a much bigger game, and that doesn't mean that immediately we just dump four times as many people on it and it also gets done in April. There's a lot more stuff to do."

Currently, more than half the game's content is complete or in alpha, and the length is "way longer" than 20 hours, though Sawyer wasn't comfortable putting a definite number to it.

"I have no idea what the final hour output is going to be — I'm not even going to guess at that … because I know better than to say."

An Early Access/beta release is planned for before launch — whenever that may be. Pillars of Eternity is due for PC, Mac, and Linux. Obsidian, most of whose team is busy working on South Park: The Stick of Truth (due early March), released the first gameplay trailer back in December.
