Obsidian teases new Sci-Fi RPG reveal at The Game Awards

It looks like Obsidian will unveil their newest game at this year’s The Game Awards. The news comes after the official website of Obsidian started popping up a countdown clock for the award show. We already know that the game is an RPG but various artwork images hint at it being set in a faux-future akin to Fallout games.

Despite Obsidian having produced one the most-beloved Fallout games with Fallout: New Vegas, we can absolutely rule out a new Obsidian-made game in that series. Both Todd Howard from Bethesda openly stated that they don’t want to outsource a Fallout game to another studio and Obsidian slammed down any hope from fans just a few weeks ago. So, it’s pretty much going to be a whole new beast on its own.

But what exactly should we expect? Obsidian’s website is showing a countdown clock for The Game Awards, this December 6th. Geoff Keighley also promoted Obsidian’s new RPG reveal during his show in a tweet yesterday. From the little info the artworks are showing, it’s fair to speculate that Obsidian’s new game is going to feature a retro-imagining of the future.

Fueling speculations that the project has similarities – and dare I say – a spiritual successor to Fallout: New Vegas, is the notable inclusion of legendary Fallout developers Leonard Boyarsky and Tim Cain on the development team. Both even stood in front of a New Vegas banner at their offices when they nonchalantly talked about the project. A coincidence?

We also know that ever since Obsidian teased work on their new RPG almost exactly one year ago, this untitled new RPG will not include any kind of microtransactions or loot boxes. This might seem as a weird first detail to share but you have to remember that the loot box controversy instigated by Battlefront II was a major topic at that time.

Furthermore, there might be some confusion about the platforms Obsidian’s new RPG will arrive on. Earlier this month, Microsoft announced the acquisition of Obsidian but this new project predates this by a long-shot. Indeed, it’s known that Take-Two subsidiary Private Division is publishing Obsidian’s new game. So, the likelihood of it being a multi-platform title is high.

Make sure to watch The Game Awards next week when we are supposedly going to see more than 10 new game announcements.
