Over the weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, Warner Bros. released a new trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
The nearly four minute trailer showed off brand new footage that includes Gal Gadot in action as Wonder Woman, Jesse Eisenberg's manipulation as Lex Luthor, and the intense feud of Batman and Superman, played by Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill, respectively. Perhaps more importantly, it provided us with some context as to why Bruce Wayne (aka Batman) has it out for Superman.
If you recall, the new trailer begins with Bruce Wayne watching helplessly from the streets of Metropolis as a giant skyscraper is cut in half by a laser and topples over, crashing down. Shortly afterward it cuts to a close-up of Wayne, in the midst of the wreckage, staring up into the sky in disbelief and anger as two alien men from Krypton completely destroyed the city. While many of us had figured this was taking place during the same time as the Superman vs Zod battle at the end of 2013's Man of Steel film, a fan has created a GIF matching up the clip from the new trailer with the exact moment it happened in Man of Steel.
Despite Superman's good intentions, his raw power makes him a destructive force that Bruce Wayne, filled with rage, believes needs to be stopped. We, of course, know Superman is not the real enemy; but, it looks like this moment is what's driving Wayne (with likely some manipulation from Lex Luthor).
When Man of Steel first released, there was some criticism over the fact that the massive amounts of human casualties from the destruction caused by the fight went completely unnoticed. It's refreshing to see a superhero movie not only acknowledge this, but for director Zack Snyder to integrate it directly into the plot of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
