Thanks to new gaming regulations, studios like Blizzard are now coming forward with loot box drop rates.
One of the most exciting things for Overwatch players to participate in has to be their big events. These events, mostly centered on holidays, present the opportunity for new game modes, story elements, and most of all, the digital chachkis like exclusive emotes and skins that you can show off throughout the year. As of late, players have been up in arms about the supposed drop rate for some of the legendary items, claiming the last few events like 'Uprising' and 'Year of the Rooster' have diminishing returns for all the hours and money being put into spinning boxes.
Thanks to a new Chinese law stipulating regulations in gaming, studios are now being forced to disclose the probability of item drops for any loot box based games like 'Overwatch'. The normal item types fall into four basic categories: Common, Rare, Epic, and Legendary. With the help of the 'Overwatch' sub-reddit, the rough calculations for drop rates are as follows:
–Common (grey): 100%, guaranteed 1-3 per box
–Rare (blue): 90-100%, usually at least one per box
–Epic (purple): 17%, 1/5.5 boxes
–Legendary (yellow): 7.2%, 1/13.5 boxes
Rumors have been circualting that these figures may apply differently between the US and China, but its likely that theory doesn't hold much weight. Now that the actual figures are out, it might give players less of a reason to accuse Blizzard of altering their drop rates for certain events, assuming of course they hold true to this formula.
