To anyone not under a rock, Overwatch is a well-known, successful class-based first-person shooter. It gathered the attention of shooter fans, multiplayer fans, Blizzard fans alike. But apparently, that fanbase isn't enough and Blizzard wants to expand it with the idea of a map editor.
In a thread on the official Overwatch forums, game director Jeff Kaplan said the development team was "open-minded" about a map editor, but stated that there are many challenges to overcome first.
"We are extremely open-minded about releasing a map editor for Overwatch someday," he said. "But because Overwatch was made with a brand new engine, this is not a small task or one which can happen any time soon."
He states that Blizzard has a "long-term road map" for Overwatch and believes in user-made content, but that Overwatch has more things to do before that's a feature ready for the public.
This road Overwatch must traverse before an editor may include new characters, like the latest addition: Orisa. She's a giant robot available to play across all platforms today. She won't be available for Competitive Play quite yet so that players have time to "learn about and play Orisa before she's placed into the crucible of Competitive Play."
