Amid what is notoriously the busiest month on the game release calendar, a little game called Owlboy had the cajones to release after nine long years in development. It comes just days after EA's "unstoppable combination" of Battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2 launched, not to mention a little game called Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare coming out this Friday. Oh, and don't forget Final Fantasy XV and Pokemon Sun and Moon aren't far off this month either.
The thing with a lot of indie games is that they know they can't compete for headlines in the same way that the AAA developers can, so many of them strategically plan their releases and announcements around those dates.
But not D-Pad Studio.
They knew they had something special after nine years in development, and it shows. If anything, their choice in release date is going to work out to their benefit, as they might just have the best game to show. Granted, I personally still need to get my hands on the game to know for sure, but early reviews are incredibly favorable, with an average Metascore of 91. A lot of heavily hyped games have done way worse than that.
So what exactly is Owlboy? It is a 2-D Action-Adventure game where you use the protagonist, Otus to help you fight enemies. The only thing Otus can do is spin, so you recruit characters throughout the game, each with unique abilities to fight for you. The idea is that you dive, dodge, duck and weave enemy attack while carefully getting your comrade into position to counter attack.
If you haven't heard of Owlboy, now is the time to get to know it. Despite the fact that we are in the busiest month of the release calendar, you need to know about Owlboy.
Owlboy is now available exclusively on PC and retails for $24.99.
