I love Michael Pachter. Regardless of his accuracy (or inaccuracy) on certain issues, the guy isn't afraid to make predictions. After all, as a respected industry analyst, it's what he does. And he's pretty damn good at it (though not the most popular of people among gamers). This is also why I love his opinion on the rumor of an Xbox mini with the ability to hook up to the next Xbox to play Xbox 360 games.
The debate comes as a result of the latest Pach Attack in which he was asked about the probability that Microsoft will release an "Xbox Mini," which includes 360 hardware and no disc drive. It's believed the Mini will attach to the next Xbox to allow for 100% backwards compatibility.
We don't know for certain if the Xbox Mini is real, but the rumor comes from Paul Thurrott, an ex-Microsoft employee, who is generally reliable. So if the Mini is indeed real, how does Pachter feel about the idea? To sum it up: if you get one, you're a dumb sh*t. His words, not mine.
"If you don't have an Xbox 360, then you don't have any Xbox 360 games. If you do have an Xbox 360 then use it to play your old games. Why do you need to buy another thing?" he asked.
"Oh, I get it. You want to trade in your 360 so you can afford a next Xbox. What are you gonna get for it? $100? What's the mini gonna cost you? $100? This is like the dumbest thing I ever heard. I do believe it's happening, but if you actually buy one, you're a dumb sh*t."
Microsoft is set to unveil its next Xbox at an event on May 21. We still don't know if it will be capable of playing Xbox 360 games, but I'm hoping we'll find out then. In the meantime, don't let Pachter know you are thinking of purchasing a hypothetical Xbox Mini.
