Paradox Now Owns Overlord Developers Triumph Studios

PikminParadox Interactive (Cities: Skylines) announced today that they've acquired Triumph Studios. For those unaware, Triumph is the developer behind Age of Wonders and Overlord.

It was announced in a press release that Paradox bought Triumph, along with their current development team. Further, they've also announced that "all ongoing projects will remain in development."

"Triumph Studios is a developer of our own heart," Paradox CEO Fredrik Wester said in a statement. "They are world-leading within their niche and have built a large and dedicated community over the years, counting quite a few Paradox employees among their hardcore fans. We have great faith in Lennart, Arno, and the Triumph team, and our main focus now is to ensure that they can continue to create their magic under new ownership."

Triumph founder Lennart Sas stated that Triumph was approached by other companies previously, who they ultimately declined. He says that with Paradox, it's "not merely a business transaction." Considering Paradox seems to keep within the double-A (not quite indie, not quite Triple-A) range of games in the titles they publish, this could only mean good things for Triumph.

"This is a liaison with a partner that can help us grow sustainably by ensuring the stability and continuity needed for us to do more of what we do best–develop some of the best turn-based strategy games on the market today. Paradox is a good match for us both culturally and games-wise. They get it. It's as simple as that, and we are extremely excited about the acquisition."

Overlord and Overlord 2, while received positively, were underrated games that deserve to remain in the spotlight. They were essentially evil Pikmin games. Players controlled an evil Overlord that had control over variously colored minions with different abilities. The ultimate goal was to squash the dim-witted good guys of the world and rule with an iron fist. The original Overlord had moments of parody for typical D&D campaigns. There was a group of retired adventurers that killed the previous overlord and they fit the cliche D&D party roster.
