Paradox recently released the 4x space strategy game Stellaris on PC with plenty of support for fan made mods. Mod support can bring the best or worst out of people and unfortunately, some Stellaris players aren't too thrilled with the game's ethnic diversity.
Paradox had to pull a mod off of the Stream Workshop that promised to make every character in the game have a European phenotype and name – also known as, a mod to make every human white.
"We shipped the game originally with an accurate representation of humans, that is to say diverse in both ethnicity and personality," a representative for Paradox told Eurogamer (via PC Gamer). "We embrace the idea that players mod the game to best represent how they want to play, we do NOT however wish to enable discriminatory practices."
Paradox saw the mod when it was first made, but decided to let it remain as it wasn't described to be anything too harmful. Apparently, the mod creator then updated the mod's description, making it clear that the mod was pushing a 'political agenda.'
“We saw the mod, thought it wasn't in very good taste, but let it remain. Then the creator of the mod decided to update the description of the mod to promote an 'agenda' not related to computer games at all, and this was being clearly displayed on our product page,” the Paradox Community Manager, who goes by Paradoxal Bear, explained on Reddit. “We decided it was a step too far and removed it.”
Paradoxal Bear went on to detail why the mod was removed in another Reddit post, “our job is to make computer games, not push political agendas.” This mod, however, “had several disturbing elements in its public description which we do not want to have clearly displayed on our project page."
Making all the humans in the game white wasn't enough for one user, who requested a mod that made all the humans male.
