90’s nostalgia is a potent drug and the Millennials are every marketing director’s dream target demographic. Somehow, those facts have Olds convinced that mash-ups are the ticket to our wallets. Which is fine, the comic world has been spitting out some cool retro offerings (X-Men 92 is pretty fantastic and fun and the same can be said for The Lego Movie) and the ensemble cast trend is still going strong in both the movie and TV worlds and the stuff that misses really just feels like shots in the dark fired at random and are more harmless than not.
However, a new rumor coming across our screens has us doing the confused puppy head tilt is the rumblings of Paramount trying to put together a Who Framed Roger Rabbit style live-action/animated hybrid film featuring the line-up from 90s Nicktoons.
The project is being pitched as a Space Jam/Wreck It Ralph style movie using Rugrats, Ren & Stimpy, Rocko’s Modern Life and others to do an Avenger’s type team up. The same sources for those rumors have Mary Parent (Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water) pegged as the spearhead on this one with Disruption Entertainment partner Cale Boyter acting as production.
Obviously, stuff like this has a potential to be a hot mess, but the same could have been said for similar 80/90s projects like Roger Rabbit and Space Jam which live on in the fickle and withholding hearts of all Millennials.
