It looks like there's a chance that esports will be making an appearance during the 2024 Olympics.
Tony Estanguet, co-president of the Paris Olympic bid committee, recently told The Associated Press (via NBC Sports) that he will be discussing with eSports representatives and the IOC on the possibility of including gaming in the 2024 Olympics.
“We have to look at it because we can’t say, ‘It’s not us. It’s not about Olympics,'” said Estanguet. “The youth, yes they are interested in esport and this kind of thing. Let’s look at it. Let’s meet them. Let’s try if we can find some bridges. I don’t want to say ‘no’ from the beginning. I think it’s interesting to interact with the IOC, with them, the esports family, to better understand what the process is and why it is such a success.”
The 2024 Olympic program will be discussed in 2019 with a final decision coming after the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, there's plenty of time to figure out whether or not esports will have a spot in the 2024 Olympic games.
While this might become the first time we see esports incorporated into the Olympic Games, it's not the first time games have made an appearance. In fact, Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzō Abe, made the most amazing Super Mario themed entrance to the closing Olympic ceremony while teasing the 2020 Olympics, which will be set in Japan.
