PAX East: Gearbox talks Borderlands 3

And it might not even be called 'Borderlands 3'

By now it’s no secret that Gearbox Software has another official entry in the Borderlands franchise cooking in the oven, which everyone (including Gearbox) knows is Borderlands 3. But details on the game’s development and whereabouts have been virtually non-existent. In a panel at PAX East today, Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford, came right out and talked about the game.

"Obviously, there is going to be another Borderlands." he said.

But what he said next was a bit of a shocker. "We don't even know if we're going to call it that."

So this means that Borderlands 3 could potentially be going the way of The Pre-Sequel, at least in terms of its naming conventions. Post-Sequel anyone? No?

All of that is simply conjecture, but what we can gather is that the next Borderlands game will continue the story post-Borderlands 2. And it was teased that we might be seeing references to Tales from the Borderlands as well.

Gearbox chief creative champion Mikey Neumann, the voice of Scooter, is writing the next Borderlands. Neumann said that the character, Scooter, who plays a prominent role in Tales from the Borderlands, might be referenced in Borderlands 3 in the form of a son named Scooper.

Granted, that’s a lot of uses of the word “might”, so take these details with a grain of salt.

If you’re looking for more concrete details, Pitchford hinted that Battleborn's upcoming DLC will contain some references to Borderlands 3 (or whatever it’s called). He said that Battleborn players should "look deeply" at the content for details. Queue the fan theories.

Gearbox has been talking about the potential for Borderlands 3 for some time, referencing ideas so big that “it scared” them. We know that the game is being built specifically for next gen hardware, so assume that Xbox One, PS4 and PC will be getting the game.
