505 Games has proudly announced that they will be publishing the PC version of video game legend Hideo Kojima’s upcoming Death Stranding. Gamers on the PC can look forward to playing the mysterious open-world action-adventure title in early summer 2020.
Rejoice fans of Hideo Kojima games! With mere days before the release of the Japanese gaming icon’s newest game for the PS4 on November 8th, we finally get the official announcement that Death Stranding will not be a PS4 exclusive and instead come to PC next year. European publisher 505 Games have struck a deal with Kojima Productions to bring the game to PC.
Death Stranding is Hideo Kojima’s first new project and IP since he infamously parted ways with his long-time company Konami. Expectations are sky-high for it, especially with Kojima’s previous masterpiece titles and penchant for unique and sometimes weird design philosophy. Despite having seen plenty of gameplay prior, Death Stranding is still shrouded in heavy mystery about the concrete gameplay, story, and themes. One thing is for sure, however. Prospect gamers are in for a wild ride unlike anything we have experienced, both from Kojima or others.
“We are extremely excited and honored to be working with the supremely talented team at Kojima Productions and to bring Death Stranding to PC gamers around the world,” said 505 Games co-founder and CEO Raffi Galante. “Death Stranding will take gamers through a completely original experience that will delight PC gamers everywhere.”
There’s no concrete release date but the window of early summer 2020 could be a sign of a six-month timed exclusivity period on the PS4. Furthermore, 505 Games have not disclosed which game store/launcher Death Stranding will come out on but seeing the insane amount of excitement and free PR done by Sony, we wouldn’t be surprised if a certain epic company was eyeing an exclusivity deal themselves.
Death Stranding has been thought of as a full PS4 exclusive for the longest time. Since its original announcement, Sony has been at the forefront of promoting the game. And it is true that DS will be exclusive to Sony’s juggernaut system, but it looks like the age of full exclusives is quickly slowing down. They aren’t going extinct though when you consider the stellar output Sony’s and Nintendo’s first-party output are creating. Still, there’s no question that multi-platform releases have gained an unprecedented amount of popularity. Just take a look at Microsoft’s paradigm shift when it comes to exclusives or previous-Sony exclusive developer Quantic Dreams venturing on other platforms. It’s understandable that what was once the major differentiator between gaming systems is changing. With ballooning developer numbers and thus development costs, it simply is too risky for most companies to stay on a smaller install base.
