Perlman encourages fans not to give up on Hellboy 3

Because we need better visibility in the demonic cat lady demographic.

So much hemming and hawing about whether or not we will get a final endcap to the BPRD crew. Hellboy 3 is one of those films that should have already happened by now. The film run began in 2004 with del Toro and starred Ron Perlman in the titular role and had a follow up, The Golden Army, in 2008 but it’s been nothing but speculation and vague finger pointing since then.

Perlman has been urging fans to stay engaged and keep asking for it and hopes to reprise the role, despite the long hours required in the makeup chair, and a fresh wave of chatter is surrounding the stalled project following an interview Perlman gave recently that shed a bit more light on the internal issues that are holding up the final chapter.

“I could actually see somebody like [Amazon CEO] Jeff [Bezos] going, ‘You guys need $120m to make Hellboy? I’m down.’ This is the reason I keep touting Hellboy 3 because I think there’s somebody out there that’s going to agree with me, that we need to finish this trilogy. I won’t answer that [who is holding it up], because it’ll make too many people uncomfortable, and I’ve already made people uncomfortable enough.

If you look at the numbers we did, we’re not a blockbuster – we’re not Iron Man, we’re not the Marvel movies, we’re not one of these movies that made half a billion dollars worldwide. That’s a mandate. We don’t have a mandate to do Hellboy 3. All we have is a modest amount of enthusiasm and that’s just not enough in today’s marketplace. That’s not the answer [I was referring to before] but we’ll use that for now – as a placeholder – until the real thing comes along!”

That obviously feels like there is a particular person or peoples who are holding up any progress for the effort and they sound strong enough to prevent it from going forward, but that said, it has been a good week for studios lightening up the internal gridlock so here’s hoping we might get to see Red aim the Good Samaritan at our hearts with a final Hellboy flick.
