Microsoft did not "force" Blizzard to support 1080p for Diablo 3 on Xbox One, despite the rampant rumors running wild of late. Originally, the Xbox One version of Blizzard's hit PC action-RPG was supposed to run at a native resolution of 900p; however, Eurogamer this week reported that Blizzard's John Hight told them after an E3 demo in June that Microsoft called the resolution "unacceptable," telling them that they need to "figure out a way to get a better resolution."
According to Xbox head Phil Spencer, that's not exactly how it went down. Responding to fans on Twitter, Phil Spencer said Microsoft doesn't "force" any game to ship at 1080p. They merely work with the developers to help create the best game as possible. In the end, it's ultimately up to the developer how the game ships.
Here's what he said on Twitter:
@XboxLiveGamer88 We didn't force any game to ship at 1080p. We work with devs to make the game they want to make on XB1.

@XboxLiveGamer88 Diablo III was coming through during GPU increases in June, was good partnership to create a great Diablo on XB1.

@DarthXbox I agree with you, let the studios make the call on what they want to ship. They know their games better than I do.

@_Wanorios_ Thanks. I just thought we could get to 1080p. If Blizzard thought it wasn't right for Diablo they had the call on what shipped.

@CYCLEGAMER1 Studios decide, even our first party studios, I won't dictate a framerate and/or resolution on a game.
